This is shot with one White Lightning X1600 and a beauty dish. You can see the dish reflected in the glasses. The light created is between that of a direct flash and a softbox, hence giving the image a contrasted look, which adds a dramatic effect. Post processing ws minor touch up and Poalpan film emulation with Alien Skin Exposure CS5 plug-in. Polapan was a Polaroid slide film that gave accidental blue/pink colour shifts.

AlienBees ABR 800 Ring Flash

Starting to get used to the ring flash. It’s really fun to use and gives interesting lighting. I love the halo effect. The trick is to stop the lens down as you move toward the subject and open it up as you move away. This is because you are shooting in manual and the flash source moves with you changing the exposure. It’s not that hard to get used to and it becomes quite intuitive. Very little Photoshop post -processing. I’m finding as my lighting gets more refined the Photoshop required is minimal.

Sophia test shoot-AlienBees ABR800 Ringflash Unit

Did a test shoot of Coultish Management model Sophia with AlienBees ABR800 ringflash unit. I used the flash alone for the image on the left. The flat lighting with no shadows has a nice, if somewhat trendy fashion look to it.

For this second image I used the flash as a fill with a 22″ beauty dish off to the right. The ring flash was set two stops under the beauty dish flash.

Now that I’ve secured studio space I’ll be getting back to work on my fashion portfolio. I’ll update the blog with some of the technical information as I go.

I’ll be using the Canon 5D Mark 2 for all of the images. I do quite a bit of Photoshop post -processing so I will incorporate this in the blogs.

I’ve mentioned this before, but just about everything I do in Photoshop can be learned at Lynda .com.

As far as lighting goes I’ll be staying with one strobe (and use a reflector when necessary). The studio has a boom stand so I’ll be able to get some interesting light effects.

So the light will be a single White Lightning 1600X . I’ll use a translucent white shoot-through umbrella for the beauty shots and a Photogenic 60″ Eclipse Plus Umbrella for most of the fashion shots.
